"MUSIC FROM A TO Z"

AT WICHITA'S EXPLORATION PLACE

When the fabulous new Exploration Place decided to have a season of musical creativity, Ann got the call--she lined up over a dozen Kansas musicians for four weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Ann sings and plays during four of the ten events, all scheduled from 11:30am to 3:30pm at this fascinating science and discovery center, 300 N. McLean Blvd., on the river in downtown Wichita.

The styles of music range from traditional and contemporary folk music to jazz and blues, classical, pure percussion, and music mixed with science experiments or played on instruments of recycled materials. Some names you will recognize from Ann's albums--multi-talented Kelly Werts with wife Diana; singing physics professor Larry Weaver, and harmonica player Thad Beach. Some names may be new to you--classical banjoist Paul Elwood; hammer dulcimer champ Princess Harris; percussionists Dean Kranzler and Eric Corby; versatile cellist Susan Mayo; rising blues harp star Ricky Brothers; and more! See the website: http://www.exploration.org .

Here's the whole schedule:

Sat. 5/26--"Contemporary folk music": Ann sings modern folk music--Kelly accompanies her.

Sun. 5/27--"Music of the Settlers": Ann, Kelly, Diana &Thad sing traditional American folk songs.

Mon. 5/28--"Recycled Instruments": Kelly, Paul and Matt Kirby play instruments of recycled stuff.

Sat. 6/30--"Mallets & Hammers": Princess and Eric swap tunes on hammer dulcimer and marimba.

Sun. 7/1--"Pure Percussion": Eric and Dean make music by banging, shaking and slapping.

Sat. 8/4--"Harmony Singing": Ann and Larry with duo Bob & Melissa Atchison join on the oldest musical instrument, the human voice.

Sun. 8/5--"Science & Music": Larry and Matt demonstrate the principals of physics that turn vibrations into music and light. Ann emcees.

Sat. 9/1--"The Duke's Jazz": Susan and friends play the timeless music of Duke Ellington.

Sun. 9/2--"Symphony Teaser": Susan, other Wichita Symphony members plus dancers preview the flamenco music of their season opener.

Mon. 9/3--"The Blues": Ricky and guitarist Li'l Hattie blast away the end-of-summer blues.

ANN DEBUTS AT SALINA'S

SMOKY HILL RIVER FESTIVAL

Ann makes her first appearance at the award-winning annual Smoky Hill River Festival in Salina, Kansas, 3pm, Friday, June 8, on Stage 2. Not only is this festival consistently the biggest and best event in the region, it also ranks at the top for being exceptionally performer-friendly compared with community festivals nationwide. So don't miss the food, the fun, the art, the crowds, or Ann's music.

PRAIRIE FESTIVAL

MOVES TO SEPTEMBER

The Land Institute's Prairie Festival near Salina, Kansas, has for many years been held on Memorial Day weekend. This year will try a new schedule. September 29-30 becomes Prairie Festival weekend, and Ann will be there singing. The details of this always-provocative celebration of scientific thinkers, earth-bound philosophers and prairie culture, art and food have yet to be announced.

NEBRASKA AND SOUTH DAKOTA

BACK ON THE CALENDAR

Beatrice, Nebraska, is familiar territory to Ann after several musical trips to Homestead National Monument. The site of an early Nebraska settler's homestead and log cabin, this monument will soon offer searchable archives of the nation's early homesteading records. Ann sings there June 9-10 alongside demonstrations of horse farming and pre-1936 farm equipment for their "Horsepower and More" celebration, and on June 20 for their Homestead Archives and Genealogy Symposium.

Vermillion, South Dakota, makes the calendar again this year, as Ann joins the Scandinavians at the Dalesburg Swedish Midsommar Festival, Dalesburg Lutheran Church, June 22. Her afternoon music precedes the sumptuous smorgasbord supper, and just after her evening show, festival goers raise the midsummer pole to great fanfare and folk dance all around the pole. Ann can claim no Scandinavian ancestors, but she's glad to highlight the "rural life" component of the festival.
